On the summit plateau of Ben Nevis, among the boulders, stand the low ruined walls of a stone building. This is the Ben Nevis Observatory, and between 1883 and 1904 it was staffed continuously, day and night, all year round, at 1,345 metres.
It is one of the more extraordinary episodes in the history of British science, and almost nobody who reaches the summit knows what they are looking at.
The observatory was built after a campaign by the Scottish Meteorological Society, funded by public subscription, and opened in 1883. A pony track — the ancestor of today’s Mountain Track — was cut up the mountain to supply it, which is why the walking route exists at all.
The observers took readings hourly, around the clock, for twenty-one years: temperature, pressure, humidity, wind, rainfall, cloud, sunshine. In winter the building was buried and entry was by a tower door above the snow; the observers dug out the instruments in whatever conditions the mountain produced. One of them recorded the summit being struck by lightning while he was taking a reading.
The resulting record remains the only long continuous high-altitude dataset from the British Isles, and it is still used.
The observatory’s most consequential legacy is indirect.
In 1894 a young physicist named C. T. R. Wilson spent a fortnight working as a temporary observer. Watching the optical effects on the summit — the glories and coronae thrown on cloud by the low sun — he became interested in how cloud droplets form, and went back to Cambridge to make cloud artificially in the laboratory.
The apparatus he built became the cloud chamber: the first instrument that made the tracks of individual subatomic particles visible. It transformed particle physics, and Wilson received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1927 for it.
A fortnight of Highland weather observation is a reasonable claim to the most productive summit visit in the mountain’s history.
Funding. The observatory ran on public subscription and small grants, an application for government support was refused, and it closed in 1904. The building was left, was used briefly as a summit hotel, and fell in.
Low stone walls, a good deal of rubble, and the emergency shelter built on top of the old tower base — a small refuge raised above the snow line, intended for emergencies only, not for lunch.
There is a memorial cairn to those killed on the mountain, and the summit trig point.
An interpretation panel on the plateau explains the observatory, weather permitting — which, given the summit is in cloud about two days in three, it frequently does not.
There is exactly one way: walk up Ben Nevis. The Mountain Track from Glen Nevis takes seven to nine hours return over 17 kilometres and 1,350 metres of ascent, and needs boots, warm and waterproof clothing, food, water and the ability to navigate in cloud.
The ruins are at the summit, near the trig point, and in poor visibility they are easy to walk past.
